Valerie Valdes was born on a pirate ship that was attacked by merciless Humboldt squid, who killed her entire family in front of her infant eyes. Saved by a pod of dolphins, who raised her as their own before being captured and trained as Seaquarium performers, Valerie has dedicated her life to eradicating the scourge of the seas by eating calamari as frequently as possible.

Valerie writes mostly microfiction and flash fiction with occasional bouts of short stories and poetry. She’s been a Municipal Liaison for NaNoWriMo for five years and loves to help her Wrimos with thorny plot problems. Her web serial Broommates, about witches and wizards living together in an old mansion with magical secrets, is published weekly on her website as well as on The Penny Dreadful. When not writing, Valerie can be found reading, watching old TV shows, playing video games or role-playing games, and generally puttering around the internet. She has an unhealthy obsession with beer despite not actually liking the taste. She lives in Miami, Florida, with her husband, baby and four cats.
